Kenyans are no push-overs, we can't take them lightly : Ganguly
20.05 IST   19th Mar 2003

By IndiaExpress Bureau

Indian captain Sourav Ganguly made it clear on Sunday there was no question of taking Kenya lightly. The African country, he said, was as good a team as any other semi-finalist.

India play Kenya in a day-night semi-final in Durban on Thursday. That the Indian team is taking it in all seriousness is clear from the way Ganguly described it : "It is the most important game of our careers".

"None of us have ever been into a World Cup final. We have never experienced it," Ganguly said ahead of the match.

"We are desperate to do well and you could expect more than 100 per cent from us."

For argument's sake, it can be said that India could not have asked for an easier opponent in the semi-finals of the World Cup. But Ganguly asserted that to under-estimate the Kenyans would be to court disaster. The crafty Kenyans have defeated three Test-playing nations on their way to the semi-finals.

"It's a World Cup semi-finals and you cannot consider any competing team as weak. We have to play well to beat them," Ganguly said.

"They have surprised quite a few teams and have played well. You don't just wake up and get to the semi-finals of a World Cup.

"It would be wrong to pick on the lack of big names in their sides. Names don't matter. What matters is only your performance on a particular day.

"They are in the semi-finals and to us they are as good as any other side," he said.
