"Smith of Western Province was picked by the national selectors to replace Shaun Pollock. His appointment was approved by the National Cricket Council of the Cricket Board," according to CEO of KwaZulu-Natal cricket Cassim Docrat. Ironically, the 22-year-old Smith was not even in the original World Cup side. Smith, who was included much later to replace the injured only Rhodes, was chosen on the strength of his aggressive batting and strong personality as a cricketer. The immediate task for the new captain will be to lead South Africa in the Sharjah tournament and the tour to Bangladesh later this month. Shaun Pollock, who was relieved of his post on Saturday, retains his place in the side. The position of Mark Boucher as vice-captain is also not certain but the national selectors are unlikely to make a fresh appointment before the team returns from its tours of Sharjah and Bangladesh. in-depth coverage > Cricket World Cup 2003 > |
