India settle the Kiwi score in style
21.02 IST   14th Mar 2003

By Manish Kumar

India wiped off the humiliation inflicted by Kiwis on doctored pitches by thrashing the Black Caps by seven wickets in their World Cup Super Six encounter at SuperSport Park in Centurion on March 14.

Chasing a victory target of 147 runs, India scored 150/3 in 40.4 overs. Mohammad Kaif and Rahul Dravid remained unbeaten on 68 and 53 respectively.

India got off to a poor start losing Virender Sehwag in the second over for 1 to Shane Bond caught by Scott Styris at second slip. In the next over, skipper Sourav Ganguly was clean bowled by Bond for 3.

With India at 21/3, Maestro Sachin Tendulkar began his counter attack. In the very next over, he slammed Daryl Tuffey for three exquisite boundaries. Two drives to long off and one a majestic pull to the mid-wicket fence.

But Tuffey had his revenge with the next ball when he had Sachin caught at backward point by Jacob Oram for 15.

With India tottering at 21/3, Kaif and Dravid put up an unbeaten match winning partnership for the fourth wicket of 129 runs. This partnership between Kaif and Dravid is a record in World Cup for India for the fourth wicket and also a record against the Kiwis.

Earlier, Ganguly won the toss and put the Kiwis in to bat.

Zaheer Khan took two wickets off second and third balls of the match to rattle the Kiwis. He claimed his 100th victim in one-day cricket when he took his third wicket, clean bowling Kiwi keeper Brendon McCullum. Zaheer is the fastest Indian to the 100-wicket landmark in 65 matches, bettering Ajit Agarkar who reached the landmark in 67 matches. Man of the Match Zaheer finished with figures of 4/42.

Harbhajan Singh took two wickets, while Javagal Srinath, Ashish Nehra, Virender Sehwag and Dinesh Mongia took one wicket each.

Skipper Stephen Fleming top scored for his side with 30 runs, as the Kiwis were bowled out for 146 runs in 45.1 overs.

Unless Zimbabwe pull off a major upset tomorrow by beating Sri Lanka, the Kiwis fly home.
