The official website of the tournament had an unusual explanation for India's march into the semi-finals. Players encouraging each other and the 'Great Indian Huddle' after the fall of every wicket are only visible features of their campaign. What is hidden from the public gaze is the fact that the team is actually led not just by Sourav Ganguly, but also by six other players. The team, after long deliberations, has appointed two "batting captains", two "bowling captains" and two "fielding captains," the website claimed. These six "captains" tell the others what they expect from them in the next game as the players do their nets. While Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid head the batting department, Javagal Srinath and Anil Kumble oversee the bowlers' performance during the training sessions. Yuvraj Singh and Mohammed Kaif, the two outstanding fielders in the Indian team take care of the fielding department. As the squad takes the field for training and nets, ‘young turks’ Yuvraj and Kaif do not shy away from pulling up the seniors for loose fielding during the nets. Meanwhile, Srinath and Kumble put on the mantle as the bowling coaches for the side. Likewise, Sachin and Dravid give valuable tips to their teammates on batting. The final meeting, held on the eve of every match, is supervised by skipper Sourav Ganguly and coach John Wright, the website said. The innovative techniques introduced by Wright and Ganguly have worked wonders for the team as is evident from their excellent performance in the World Cup. in-depth coverage > Cricket World Cup 2003 > |
