Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee may not go to South Africa to cheer the Indian cricket team if they reach the World Cup final on March 23. Minister of State for External Affairs Digvijay Singh said on Thursday: "The Prime Minister will be with us." Mr. Singh, who is also the president of the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI), this was because the Prime Minister would be the chief guest on March 22 at the closing ceremony of the World Cup Shotgun shooting championship. "They (media) are free to report. You are talking to the External Affairs Minister and I should know where the PM is going," Mr. Singh said. Mr. Digvijay Singh also ruled out a rethink on India's pullout from the SAF Games in Islamabad beginning on March 29. "As long as they support cross-border terrorism we won't go," he said. The Indian Olympic Association has been advised against sending a contingent to the 9th SAF Games citing security threats to athletes. Asked whether the Sports Ministry wrote to his Ministry after BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmiya met Sports Minister Vikram Verma and appealed for revival of Indo-Pak cricket ties, Digvijay Singh said: "not to my knowledge". in-depth coverage > Cricket World Cup 2003 > |
