With this defeat, India lost the ODI series 5-2. Put in to bat by Kiwi skipper Stephen Fleming, Indian batting again came a cropper as they were bundled out for 122 runs in 44.5 overs. Virender Sehwag, who just two days back said that he is yet to face a great bowler, fell to an ordinary bowler Kyle Mills, playing an ordinary shot in the sixth over. Sehwag edged a wide delivery into the hands of keeper Brendon McCullum after scoring four runs. Batting at number three, Sachin Tendulkar (1) was dismissed in the next over, edging a Daryl Tuffey delivery to first slip for Fleming to take the catch. The pair of Tuffey and Fleming struck on the very next delivery dismissing Dinesh Mongia for a first ball duck. Fleming gave Mills an extended spell of seven overs and the bowler responded by picking the wicket of Rahul Dravid (12) caught at second slip by Scott Styris. Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly (15) was dismissed in the next over when he edged a delivery off Andre Adams onto his stumps. India lost half of their side in just 14.4 overs with only 44 runs on the board. Mohammad Kaif continued with his horrendous form with the bat. Kaif failed to get off the mark and edged a delivery by Adams into the hands of McCullum. From a tottering 44/6, Yuvraj Singh and Anil Kumble took India to 93/7. Yuvraj top scored for India with 33, while Kumble contributed with a well-made gritty 21. For the Kiwis, Adams took four wickets, while Tuffey, Mills and Styris took two wickets each. The Kiwi reply started on a poor note with Javagal Srinath castling the stumps of Mathew Sinclair (3) in the third over. Zaheer Khan struck from the end trapping McCullum (4) plumb in front of the wicket to reduce Kiwis to 12/2. Srinath then clean bowled Chris Cairns for 11 for his 299th ODI wicket. This is the third time in three consecutive matches that Srinath has clean-bowled Cairns with his incoming deliveries. Srinath almost had his 300th wicket but he failed to hold on to a simple catch by Scott Styris on his follow-through. Had he taken that catch, Srinath would have joined the 300-wicket club of Wasim Akram (490), Waqar Younis (409), Anil Kumble (303-including this match) and Muttiah Muralitharan (300). With the Kiwis just seven runs away from victory, Styris (29) was clean bowled by Kumble. Fleming led his side to victory with an unbeaten 60 and was adjudged the Man of the Match. With 18 wickets in his kitty, Srinath was the leading wicket-taker in this series from either side. So India ended the New Zealand tour on a dismal note. They lost the Test series 2-0 and the one-day series 5-2. With the Indian batting failing so consistently just ahead of the World Cup, what an eye-opener this tour has proven to be. in-depth coverage > Indian Cricket Team's New Zealand Tour > |
