After brilliant displays with the bat and the ball by Virender Sehwag and Javagal Srinath respectively, India almost messed it up chasing a low victory target of 200 runs against New Zealand in the sixth one-dayer at Eden Park in Auckland on January 11.From a comfortable 182/4, India slipped to 198/9 and in the end, thanks to a wild slog by Ashish Nehra, India won by one wicket, with one ball to spare. Penalised by one over for slow over rate, the Indian reply started with the skipper Sourav Ganguly finding some form with 23. Rahul Dravid contributed with 21 runs, while Sachin Tendulkar scored just one run. Sehwag reached his fifth century in 127 balls, with eleven fours and two sixes. This is Sehwag’s third century against the Kiwis, his second in the series and he is the only player to hit a century in this series. Sehwag scored 112 runs (he hit another six after reaching his century) and left India well within sights of victory at 182/4. What followed was disaster. India lost the next five wickets for just sixteen runs and in the end just managed to win. Earlier, Ganguly won the toss and put in the Kiwis to bat. Srinath registered the third most economical spell by an Indian in ODI cricket of 10-2-13-3. Zaheer Khan, Ajit Agarkar, Nehra and Ganguly took one wicket each as New Zealand scored 199/9 in their 50 overs. Sehwag was adjudged the Man of the Match. New Zealand lead the series 4-2 and the last match of the series is in Hamilton on January 14. in-depth coverage > Indian Cricket Team's New Zealand Tour > |
