That loss in December 1998 was also to England. This is the Aussies’ heaviest loss to England since they were beaten by an innings and 14 runs at Melbourne in December 1986. In an inspired display of fast bowling, Andrew Caddick captured seven wickets as Australia collapsed to 226 all out in their second innings chasing 452 runs to win. With 3/121 in the first innings and 7/94 in the second, Caddick registered his first ten-wicket haul in a Test. Australia resumed the final day at 91/3, needing to bat through the entire day on a crumbling Sydney Cricket Ground pitch to save the Test, but folded quickly to be all out 48 minutes after lunch in just 54 overs. Caddick captured the wickets of Andy Bichel (49), Steve Waugh (6), Adam Gilchrist (37), Brett Lee (46) and Stuart MacGill (1) after getting Justin Langer (3) and Ricky Ponting (11) to finish with 7/94, his second best return in 62 Test appearances. Caddick effectively ended Australia's hopes of saving the match when he collected three scalps in his first spell then returned after lunch to mop up the tail. Australia's batting lineup failed to show any real resistance with fast bowlers Bichel and Lee top scoring with 49 and 46 respectively while wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist made an adventurous 37 when the match was as good as over. With this win, England prevented a clean sweep by the Aussies who won the Ashes 4-1. Michael Vaughan was adjudged the Man of the Match as well as the Man of the Series. in-depth coverage > Ashes Series 2002-2003 > |
