At the close of the third day, Vaughan was unbeaten on 113 with skipper Nasser Hussain providing solid support not out 34 and England were 218 for two -- a lead of 217 runs with eight wickets intact and two days to play. This is Vaughan’s third century of the series, which came off 147 balls with 14 fours and a six. He earlier hit centuries in Adelaide (177) and Melbourne (145). Earlier, Australia clawed their way to a bare lead after adding 126 for the last five wickets on Saturday to finish the series leading on the first innings in all of five Tests. Adam Gilchrist hit a sparkling hundred (133). His 100 came off 94 balls with 14 boundaries. Waugh was out in the second over of the day without addition to his overnight score.
