Opener Michael Vaughan hit unbeaten ton to put England well on the road to beating Australia for the first time this summer in the final Test of the Ashes Series at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday.

At the close of the third day, Vaughan was unbeaten on 113 with skipper Nasser Hussain providing solid support not out 34 and England were 218 for two -- a lead of 217 runs with eight wickets intact and two days to play.

This is Vaughan’s third century of the series, which came off 147 balls with 14 fours and a six. He earlier hit centuries in Adelaide (177) and Melbourne (145).

Earlier, Australia clawed their way to a bare lead after adding 126 for the last five wickets on Saturday to finish the series leading on the first innings in all of five Tests.

Adam Gilchrist hit a sparkling hundred (133). His 100 came off 94 balls with 14 boundaries.

Waugh was out in the second over of the day without addition to his overnight score.

The highest winning score at the SCG is 276 for four set over a century ago, which Australia scored to beat England by six wickets.
