Andy Caddick struck on the first ball of the day when he had Matthew Hayden caught at deep square leg by substitute Alex Tudor for one. Ricky Ponting scored a quickfire 30 before he was caught down the leg side by wicket keeper James Foster off Stephen Harmison. Harmison struck again the same over when he had Damien Martyn also caught by Foster. Martyn went for a duck and Australia looked in trouble at 58/3. Aussie skipper Steve Waugh was caught at short extra cover by his counterpart Nasser Hussain but off a no-ball by Harmison. But after scoring 14 runs, Waugh was caught in the slips by Mark Butcher off Caddick. In the same over, Caddick trapped Justin Langer (24) plumb in front of the wicket to reduce Australia to 90/5. Debutant Martin Love and wicket keeper batsman Adam Gilchrist guided their side to victory with unbeaten knocks of 6 and 10 respectively. Langer was adjudged the Man of the Match for his first innings knock of 250. With the win, Waugh passed Allan Border's Australia record of 32 Test wins (in 93 Tests). The 37-year-old skipper set the record in his 44th match in charge after the retirement of Mark Taylor ahead of the 1999 Caribbean tour. With the Aussies leading the series 4-0, the fifth and last Test starts at Sydney Cricket Ground from January 2. in-depth coverage > Ashes Series 2002-2003 > |
