At stumps England had lost the wickets of opener Marcus Trescothick and Mark Butcher to be 111/2 with Michael Vaughan scoring a fighting 55 not out in 144 minutes and Hussain unbeaten on eight. Only allrounder Craig White, batting with painkillers for a torn side muscle, offered stout resistance with an unbeaten 85 as England were dismissed for 270 in their first innings for a 281-run deficit. England were still 170 runs short of Australia's mammoth first innings declaration of 551 for six. Earlier, White narrowly missed scoring a well-deserved century in the first innings as England were forced to bat a second time after tea. Yorkshire-born allrounder White, played a lone hand and was left stranded on 85 when he ran out of partners. He featured in a 54-run partnership for the seventh wicket with John Crawley (17), 55 for the eighth wicket with James Foster (19) and a 37-run ninth-wicket stand with Andy Caddick (17). Jason Gillespie finished with 4-25 off 16.3 overs, while legspinner Stuart MacGill and Brett Lee claimed two wickets each. in-depth coverage > Ashes Series 2002-2003 > |
