Hooper-Holding verbal spat rages over Jodhpur toss
19.41 IST   25th Nov 2002

By IndiaExpress Bureau

The controversy over who won the toss in the Jodhpur one-dayer between India and West Indies continues to rage.

The row took a new twist with West Indies captain Carl Hooper on Monday dismissing as "not worth a reaction" the comments of his former team-mate and fast bowler Michael Holding.

Hooper said, "Holding's comments are not even worth a reaction. Toss is a matter between the two captains and the match-referee and they don't have a confusion on the issue. The rest is unnecessary frills."

In a hard-hitting syndicated column on Monday, Holding criticized Hooper for suggesting commentators should stick to their job and let the administrators run the game. The West Indies skipper's comments, said Holding were insipid and irrelevant.

Holding, who had voiced his doubts over who had actually won the toss in the Jodhpur match, said, "I don't see how what has transpired can be interpreted as a commentator trying to run the game."

Match-referee Mike Proctor tried to make light of the controversy, which is threatening to turn into a public spat between Holding and Hooper.

"I categorically deny it (anything fishy during the toss). The press has written wrongly and it could check this out with the two captains," Proctor said before the last one-dayer at Vijayawada seeking to put an end to the unsavory episode.
