The Aussies also won the battle against the elements as at one stage it looked as if rains would play the spoil-sport. Fast bowler Glenn McGrath, 4-41, and legspinner Shane Warne, 3-36, England’s bogey men once again caused the destruction of England, who were bowled out for 159 in the second innings. Warne finished with 7-129 to take his tally for 2002 to 64 wickets in nine tests. Only Alec Stewart, 57 runs, showed signs of putting up a fight on a rain interrupted day. His 74-run stand for the fifth-wicket with Vaughan (41), delayed the inevitable. Resuming the day on 36 for three after losing skipper Nasser Hussain to the last ball of the third day, England capitulated before and after lunch. England lost the last six wickets for 45 runs as three rain stoppages after lunch delayed the home side's charge. The highlight of the last day was the sensational outfield catch McGrath took to dismiss Vaughan. Vaughan swept Warne, and McGrath ran around the long leg boundary and scooped it inches off the ground as he dived forward. in-depth coverage > Ashes Series 2002-2003 > |
