Australian captain Steve Waugh declared their first innings at 552 for nine giving the tourists the 12 remaining overs. At stumps, England were 36 for three with Marcus Trescothick, Mark Butcher and captain Nasser Hussain already back in pavilion. First innings centurion Michael Vaughan was 17 not out. Earlier, Australia batted themselves into an invincible position with Ponting scoring 154, his fifth century in his last seven Tests.
