After dismissing England for 342 at lunch, Australia reached 247/2 at stumps on the second day. Langer (48) and Hayden (46) set the pace in reply with 101 runs off just 119 balls as Australia scored 125 for two in 27 overs between lunch and tea. Their seventh century partnership in 15 Tests gave the Langer-Hayden partnership 1,732 Test runs, surpassing the New Zealand pair of Bruce Edgar and John Wright, whose shared 1,655 runs in 32 Tests was a record for a left-handed combination. Langer and Hayden flayed another hapless new ball spell by Andy Caddick and Matthew Hoggard before Craig White and off-spinner Richard Dawson combined to check the smooth progress. The pair hammered 13 fours and a six before Hayden failed to notch triple figures for the first time in the series. He scored 197 and 103 in Australia's 384-run win in the first Test at Brisbane. Langer was adjudged caught behind off Dawson's bowling. England's joy was short lived, and four dropped catches didn't help its cause as Ricky Ponting and Damien Martyn took charge. Ponting followed up his 123 in the first Test in Brisbane with 83 not out, and shared a 133-run third-wicket stand with Martyn, 48 not out, after the two openers had fallen in the space of 14 runs. Martyn was dropped on 18 and 37 by veteran wicketkeeper Alec Stewart off Dawson and then fast bowler Steve Harmison. This was after Hayden had survived two catches on 22 and 24 in successive overs. With the pitch already showing signs of producing varied bounce, a reasonable first innings lead would put Australia in prime position to take a 2-0 lead in the five-match series. Fast bowler Jason Gillespie snared four wickets for 10 runs in 6.5 overs as England, resuming at 295/4, lost its last six wickets for the addition of 47 runs in the morning session. He returned 4/78 and leg-spinner Shane Warne had 4/93, making short work on the England first innings after opener Michael Vaughan had hit a plucky 177 on Thursday following skipper Nasser Hussain's decision to bat first. "We weren't overly impressed with our performance on the first day," Gillespie said. "We didn't bowl as well as we could, and our catching was not up to the mark. "It was nice to bowl some impact balls, and we executed our plans well. We were patient and applied a lot more pressure." Gillespie said Andy Bichel's breakthrough to remove Vaughan late Thursday was crucial and lifted the Australians. "That wicket gave us a big lift," Gillespie said. England had the ascendancy until Australia took the second new ball late on the first day and removed Vaughan with the last ball of the evening. Gillespie struck for the first time Friday, in his 22nd over when he had Mark Butcher (22) caught behind without addition to his overnight score, and then had White (1), caught at long leg off a miscued hook. While Stewart compiled 29 runs in almost two hours, England's lower-order capitulated. Warne trapped Dawson (6) lbw after 48 minutes at the crease and then bowled Caddick (0) four balls later, behind the legs. Gillespie, who had overcome a calf strain to play in this Test, then trapped Stewart with the first ball of a new spell before having Hoggard caught behind to give wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist his third catch of the innings. in-depth coverage > Ashes Series 2002-2003 > |
