Warne said Hussain must not repeat the mistake he made in the visitors' 384-run loss at the Gabba - sending Australia in to bat - if he wins the toss on the batsman-friendly Adelaide Oval. He also advised England to play two spinners and avoid the negative option of taking an extra batsman into the match. "I would say the best thing for them to do, with the way the quicks bowled in Brisbane and the few injuries they've got, would be to win the toss, bat and play two spinners," Warne said today. "I think that would be an aggressive, positive move from England. Whether they do that or not, who knows? There's no use playing eight or nine batters, they've got to take 20 wickets to win the Test match." Hussain admitted after the opening Test he erred by sending the Australians in. His bowlers were pounded by Matthew Hayden and Ricky Ponting as Australia cruised to 364 for 2 on the first day. Warne suggested a repeat in Adelaide would be madness. "I'll be very surprised if he bowls, if he wins the toss and bowls I'll be very happy," he said. Warne admitted Australia's decision to select him, as its only spinner for the Adelaide Test was an unusual move. "I think just about every time I've played here, maybe for 10 years, we've had a second spinner," he said. Warne also said it was inevitable that Sri Lankan off spinner Muttiah Muralitharan would eventually become Test cricket's highest ever wicket-taker after he climbed to third on the all-time list on Sunday. Muralitharan, with 435 Test wickets, trails just Warne (481 wickets) and retired West Indian paceman Courtney Walsh (519). "There's no race or anything like that to get to Courtney," Warne said. "But I don't think it will matter, because whoever gets there, I think Murali will overtake us pretty quickly. He'll get 800 wickets, maybe 1,000, unless he gets major injuries." in-depth coverage > Ashes Series 2002-2003 > |
