Waugh is expecting Gillespie to pass a fitness test ahead of the match. Talking to reporters in Adelaide, Waugh said, "He's had a week off. He's recovered from these things before. He's very keen to play so I expect Jason to be right." The Australian team physiotherapist Errol Alcott told reporters on Sunday that Gillespie was expected to play in the Test but still had to prove he had recovered from a calf strain which hampered him at times in Australia's 384-run victory in the first test in Brisbane earlier this month. If Gillespie is chosen for the second test as expected, Andy Bichel and Brett Lee will fight for the final fast bowler's spot in the starting 11 after both were chosen in a 12-man squad. Bichel won the position ahead of Lee in the first test after impressing selectors when he replaced Gillespie against Pakistan but took just two wickets in the first innings and did not bowl in the second. Australia's fastest bowler, Lee was dropped for the first time in his career but has taken 21 wickets for New South Wales in two first-class matches since to push his claims for an immediate recall. in-depth coverage > Ashes Series 2002-2003 > |
