And for the second day in a row, it started pouring in the Indian run chase. So the ICC Champions Trophy was shared amongst India and Sri Lanka, sad from the Indian point of view, because they had a big chance to win today. India, chasing a victory target of 223 runs, were 38/1 with Virender Sehwag (25) and Sachin Tendulkar (7) at the crease. Opener Dinesh Mongia went for a duck. Earlier, Sri Lankan skipper Sanath Jayasuriya won the toss and elected to bat. Jayasuriya got out on the first ball of the match, edging a Zaheer Khan delivery on to his stumps. Fired up Indians took three more wickets quickly to reduce the hosts to 71/4. But Mahela Jayawardene (77) and Russel Arnold (56 n.o.) added 118 runs for the fifth wicket to take their team out of trouble. Sri Lanka put up a total of 222 with the loss of five wickets in their allotted 50 overs. For record, this was Sachin Tendulkar's 300th, Muttiah Muralitharan’s 200th and umpire Steve Bucknor’s 100th ODI. in-depth coverage > ICC Champions Trophy 2002 > |
