The match will begin afresh on Monday. India had already put up 14 runs courtesy Virender Sehwag in two overs when it started pouring. Surprisingly, Indian skipper did not partner Sehwag in the opening slot. He sent in Dinesh Mongia instead. Ganguly’s ability to play spinners better than Mongia could be the reason behind the move. Earlier, Sri Lankan skipper Sanath Jayasuriya won the toss and elected to bat. The hosts got off to a good start with openers Jayasuriya and Marvan Atapattu putting up 65 runs. In a surprising role reversal, Jayasuriya was subdued while Atapattu smashed the ball around scoring 34 runs off 46 balls with five fours. Atapattu was caught, at second attempt, by Ajit Agarkar in Harbhajan Singh’s first over. Harbhajan returned the compliments by taking a brilliant running catch off Agarkar’s bowling. The catch saw the exit of Jayasuriya, who was looking good for a century. The Harbhajan effort cut short the Lankan captain’s innings at 74. Aggressive wicket keeper batsman Kumar Sangakkara chipped in with 54 runs, and India restricted Sri Lanka to 244/5 in their 50 overs. Harbhajan took three wickets, while Agarkar and Sachin Tendulkar took one each. Zaheer Khan bowled well with immaculate line and length hardly giving anything away but was unlucky not to get a wicket. The comeback ‘kid’ Javagal Srinath was off target, giving away as many as 55 runs off his eight overs. India made three changes with Srinath, Mongia and Agarkar replacing Ashish Nehra, V V S Laxman and Anil Kumble respectively. in-depth coverage > ICC Champions Trophy 2002 > |
