With this win, the Lankans have set up the title clash with India in the final of the tournament on Sunday at the same venue. Chasing a low victory target of 163 runs, Sri Lanka with wonderful knocks from vice-captain Marvan Atapattu, wicket keeper Kumar Sangakkara and skipper Sanath Jayasuriya romped home with ten overs to spare. Playing the sheet anchor role to perfection, Atapattu top scored with 51. Sangakkara and Jayasuriya chipped in with 48 and 42 runs respectively. Earlier, Aussie skipper Ricky Ponting won the toss and elected to bat. Australia got off to a flying start with Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden amassing 49 runs in less than seven overs, punishing the Sri Lankan fast bowlers ruthlessly. Jayasuriya was forced to introduce spin as early as in the eighth over and that did the trick. Aravinda De Silva clean bowled Hayden (13) in his very first over. Kumar Dharmasena struck next in the very next over having Gilchrist (31) edge to the covers for Atapattu to take the catch. With the spinners continuing to play havoc, the Aussie kept losing wickets regularly. De Silva bowled ten overs on the trot and finished with figures of 10-2-16-1. He was adjudged the Man of the Match for his bowling for the first time in his glittering career. Warne top scored for his side with 36, with the world champions getting bundled out for 162 runs in 48.4 overs. in-depth coverage > ICC Champions Trophy 2002 > |
