Ganguly wants Srinath to replace Nehra for the finals
10.53 IST   27th Sept 2002

By IndiaExpress Bureau

Indian skipper Saurav Ganguly told the reporters on Thursday evening, that the hurt left-handed pace bowler Ashish Nehra would not be playing in the finals of ICC Champions trophy on Sunday.

As a replacement for Nehra, Ganguly said that he had suggested the Indian cricket board BCCI to send the Karnataka speedster Javagal Srinath to play in the finals. He, however, added that the decision to send Srinath would be in the hands of the board and the selectors.

Nehra had sustained a finger injury in the India-South Africa match on Wednesday while attempting to run-out a South African batsman.

The fact that both John Wright and the Indian skipper sought Srinath as Nehra’s replacement means that Srinath is being preferred ahead of Ajit Agarkar.

Apart from Agarkar, either of the two other bowlers – Tinu Yohanan or Balaji – might stand a chance to get requisitioned.
