Sehwag pulls off an incredible win for India at Premadasa
22.47 IST   25th Sept 2002

By Manish Kumar

After blasting it out with the bat, Virender Sehwag tweaked the ball to swing the first semi-final of the ICC Champions Trophy India’s way, beating South Africa by 10 runs at the Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on September 25.

With this win India are through to the final of the tournament and will meet the winner of the second semi-final that is to be played on Wednesday between hosts Sri Lanka and world champions Australia.

Chasing a victory target of 262 runs, South Africa set about their run chase on a good note even though losing their first wicket cheaply. Opener Graeme Smith (4) was brilliantly caught at backward point by Yuvraj Singh off Zaheer Khan with just 14 runs on the board.

But Herschelle Gibbs and Jacques Kallis shared a record second wicket partnership of 180 runs to blow away any hopes of an Indian win.

Gibbs went on to score his ninth ODI hundred off 96 balls but after reaching 116 had to retire hurt due to dehydration in the extreme hot and humid conditions. That triggered off the collapse.

Harbhajan Singh dismissed Jonty Rhodes (caught brilliantly by Yuvraj) and Boeta Dippenaar (caught by Anil Kumble) in the same over to send the Proteas on the backfoot.

Then Sourav Ganguly introduced Sehwag in the attack and the Delhi lad with his slow and low off-spinners took the match away from the Proteas.

Sehwag first had Mark Boucher (10) caught by Yuvraj at short fine leg, then had Kallis (97) caught by wicket keeper Rahul Dravid. With 11 runs to get off the last ball of the South African innings, Sehwag had Lance Klusener caught at long off by Mohammad Kaif to seal the match for India.

The catches of Smith and Rhodes that Yuvraj took were simply spectacular. Being a left-hander, Yuvraj plucked both the catches out of thin air diving full length to his right. Undoubtedly, Rhodes would have been proud of both the catches.

Earlier, Ganguly won the toss and elected to bat.

Even though Ganguly (13) failed with the bat, Sehwag got off in his trademark fashion blasting to his 50 off just 46 balls with 9 fours. But he got after scoring 59 runs.

Yuvraj top scored with 62, while Dravid was unlucky to miss out on his fifty by just one run.

South Africa restricted India to 261/9 in 50 overs, which was easily gettable, but then Man of the Match Sehwag was given the ball and he did what no one could have imagined.
