Daren Ganga will replace star West Indies batsman Brian Lara for the Windies’ tour of India in October.
A right-handed batsman, Ganga has played in 12 tests, scoring 563 runs at an average of 20.85.
Ganga, 23, also captained the West Indies ‘A’ team that recently undertook a tour of England and Canada.
West Indies will play three Tests and seven one-day internationals in the India series.
Lara was admitted to hospital for “suspected hepatitis” after scoring 111 against Kenya in the ICC Champions Trophy league match against Kenya in Colombo last week.
