Sehwag, Ganguly power India into semis
22.05 IST   22nd Sept 2002

By Manish Kumar

It was pyrotechnics pure and simple at the Premadasa stadium on Sunday. An inspired India pummeled their way into the semi-finals of the ICC Champions Trophy on the strength of scintillating centuries by Virender Sehwag and skipper Sourav Ganguly.

England bowling was literally put to the sword by the rampaging Indian openers. Sehwag in particular unleashed a savage attack knocking the stuffing out of the hapless English bowlers for whom nothing went right on Sunday.

‘Blitzkrieger’ Sehwag raced to his fifty in just 37 balls with eight fours and a six over third man. In the next 40 balls and with nine more fours, the devastating batsman from Delhi reached his second ODI hundred.

Sehwag put up 192 runs for the opening wicket with his skipper and when he got out after scoring 126 runs (104b, 21x4, 6x1), the match was well within India’s grasp and the England bowlers were completely demoralized.

Sehwag was adjudged the Man of the Match.

Ganguly reached his 19th ODI century and his first against England with a six off Ronnie Irani. The Indian skipper remained not out on 117 with twelve fours and three sixes.

Earlier, England skipper Nasser Hussain won the toss and elected to bat.

The Indian opening bowlers Zaheer Khan and Ashish Nehra bowled superbly and were on the mark right from the word go, hardly giving away any runs.

Nehra dismissed Marcus Trescothick (0) and Hussain (1) quickly to reduce England to 7/2.

Ian Blackwell top scored for his side with 82. Opener Nick Knight chipped in with 50, while Irani, Alec Stewart and Owais Shah contributed with 37, 35 and 34 respectively.

England put up a good score of 269 runs, but with the kind of form the Indian team is in, it seemed far too less. India won the match by eight wickets with 10.3 overs to spare and will now meet South Africa in the first semi-final on Wednesday at this very venue.

The next match of the tournament is between New Zealand and Bangladesh at the SSC on Monday.
