India take on England in a do-or-die match on Sunday
18.42 IST   21st Sept 2002

By IndiaExpress Bureau

Stylish Hyderabad batsman V V S Laxman is likely to replace out-of-form Dinesh Mongia when India take on England in the important match at the Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Sunday for a place in the semi-finals of the ICC Champions Trophy cricket tournament.

"There is a chance of Laxman playing tomorrow," captain Sourav Ganguly said ahead of the crucial match, which promises to end a spate of one-sided encounters in the tournament.

Another change, which India need to make, is to play Ajit Agarkar. He is a good one-day bowler, a brilliant fielder and can play a good hand with bat too. India can do without Ashish Nehra in one-day matches whose batting and fielding is not even worth mentioning.

India have won 11 of their last 15 matches, including the sensational two-wicket win against England in the final of the NatWest Trophy series two months ago, and are in the midst of a very good run.

England themselves have done pretty well in recent times, and their ten matches with India this year have all been close affairs. Their comprehensive victory against Zimbabwe earlier in this tournament was only an indication of the fine form they are in.

The two teams look equally balanced.

India and England have met each other in 46 ODIs, with England winning in 23, while Indian winning in 21. Two matches didn’t have any results. But India have an edge over England in recent times, having won the NatWest series in England chasing a huge target.
