Kenya, chasing a victory target of 262 runs, were bowled out for 232 runs in 49.1 overs. Skipper Steve Tikolo fought a lonely battle for the Kenyans with a superb knock of 93 runs, that came off 91 balls with nine fours. For the Windies, Pedro Collins took three wickets, while Mervyn Dillon, Mahendra Nagamootoo and Chris Gayle took two wickets each. Earlier, West Indian skipper Carl Hooper won the toss and elected to bat. Riding high on Brian Lara’s fifteenth one-day century, the West Indies scored 261 runs with the loss of six wickets in the allotted 50 overs. During his knock of 111 runs, Lara also completed 7500 ODI runs. The great left-handed batsman was adjudged the Man of the Match. Though Kenya lost the match, they fought hard, giving the Windies a bit of a scare. In fact, when Tikolo was at the crease, it almost looked like they will pull off a win, the way they surprised the whole world by defeating the West Indies in the 1996 World Cup in Pune. The next match of the tournament is between England and Zimbabwe at the Premadasa on Wednesday. in-depth coverage > ICC Champions Trophy 2002 > |
