Who will it be: Sachin, Gavaskar or Kapil?

On Tuesday night, Wisden, considered to be the Bible of cricket, will announce the Indian Cricketer of the Century Award. Although there are 16 nominees, front-runners for the coveted award are Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev.

Only two contemporary cricketers have made it to the list of 16 -- Sachin Tendulkar and Anil Kumble, who is the second Indian bowler to take 300 test wickets. A surprise inclusion is Mohammed Azharuddin, who is under a life ban from cricket.

India’s most successful captain Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi , who led the country to 12 test victories and captained it in 40 out of the 46 tests that he played is among the nominees. Then there is another former cricket giant C K Nayadu, who is best remembered for his 153 against MCC in 1926.

Another top contender is former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar. The former opening batsman still holds the record for the most Test centuries (34).

Batting genius Sachin Tendulkar is a player whose phenomenal record speaks for itself. The ‘Don” of Indian cricket has 29 test centuries to his credit, a record he shares with the all-time great Sir Donald Bradman. Tendulkar also has the maximum number of one-day hundreds (33), making an astounding total of 61 international centuries.

Tendulkar is also the first cricketer to score more than 10,000 one-day runs. That he has never been part of an overseas Test series outside the subcontinent is perhaps the only thing against him.

Kapil Dev's finest hour -- that of Indian cricket too -- was the World Cup win in 1983. The former Indian captain, one of the greatest all rounders in the game, also held the record for the most Test wickets till Courtney Walsh eclipsed it two years ago.
