India lose a thriller at Feroze Shah Kotla
19.08 IST   31st Jan 2002

By Manish Kumar

An inspired England pulled off a thrilling two-run win over India in the fifth one-day international of the series at the Feroze Shah Kotla Grounds in New Delhi on January 31.

Chasing an imposing victory target of 272 runs, India managed to score 269 runs with the loss of eight wickets in the allotted 50 overs.

India did get off to a good start, but not the kind they made in the last two matches of the series. Of course, in-form Virender Sehwag began the proceedings by cover driving the first ball of the Indian innings by Andrew Caddick for four.

In the fifth over, with 39 runs on the board, India lost their first wicket when Sachin Tendulkar (18, 16b, 4x3) edged a brilliant delivery off Andrew Caddick for wicket keeper James Foster to take the catch.

Local lad Sehwag played his natural game and scored 42 runs off 36 balls with 7 fours. But he was cut off in the prime when Nick Knight caught him at first slip off Darren Gough. That left India at 68/2.

Dinesh Mongia (20) was the next to depart by playing an atrocious shot. He chased a wide delivery outside the off-stump, which he should have left alone. Foster gratefully accepted the resultant catch off Andrew Flintoff. Things looked grim for India with the score at 100/3.

But Skipper Sourav Ganguly and Mohammed Kaif had other ideas. The duo put up 111 runs for the fourth to put India back in the game.

Ganguly, who came in at number three, struck form scoring 74 runs off 95 balls with 5 fours and 3 huge sixes, all off Ashley Giles. But Giles had the last laugh when he had Ganguly caught at long off by substitute Owais Shah to put India at 211/4. Ganguly’s dismissal was the turning point of the match.

Giles struck again in the same over to have Kaif caught in the covers by Graham Thorpe. Kaif showed good temperament in scoring 46 runs. He too got out to a casual shot.

Giles took three more wickets, those of Hemang Badani (2), Ajay Ratra (10) and Anil Kumble (2), to reduce India to 239/8.

But all was not lost for India. Ajit Agarkar showed his worth with the bat again hitting an unbeaten 36 off just 24 balls and almost pulled off a victory for India. But that was not to be. Off the last ball of Gough, India needed five runs to win. Agarkar could only score two runs.

Giles, who bowled his career best spell of 5-57, was adjudged the Man of the Match.

Earlier, Ganguly won the toss and, to the pleasant surprise of his rival skipper Nasser Hussain, chose to field.

England opener Nick Knight (105) hit a brilliant century in the big England score of 271 runs. He was ably assisted by Marcus Trescothick (35), Hussain (49) and Flintoff (52).

In the end, Ganguly’s gamble in deciding to field first proved disastrous for India.

India still lead the series 3-2 but England have a chance to even the series in the last ODI, which will be played in Mumbai on Sunday.
