India thrash England as Sachin completes 11,000 runs
17.55 IST   28th Jan 2002

By Manish Kumar

India registered a resounding eight-wicket victory over England as Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar completed 11,000 runs in one-day international cricket at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur on January 28.

With this win, India have taken an unbeatable 3-1 lead in the six-match series.

The start of match was delayed due to damp outfield and play was reduced to 39 overs-a-side.

Chasing 219 runs to win, India got off to a rollicking start with both Sachin and Virender Sehwag coming up with dazzling batting performances.

Sachin and Sehwag pulverized the England bowling attack putting up 98 runs in the 11 overs when the field restrictions were on.

Sehwag raced to fifty off just 36 balls, with ten fours. Sehwag departed after scoring 82 runs off just 62 balls with 14 fours. This was in the 18th over with 134 runs on the board. Sehwag mistimed a shot off Paul Collingwood to give Matthew Hoggard a simple catch. Sehwag was adjudged the Man of the Match.

Sachin reached his fifty off 46 balls with 8 fours. The Master Batsman remained not out on 87 off 67 balls with 13 fours and one six. The six was hit straight down the ground to register victory for India. Seemed like this knock was the Master Blaster’s tribute to his close friend and WorldTel chief Mark Mascrenhas, who died in a road accident on Sunday.

India lost their second wicket when skipper Sourav Ganguly (26) was clean bowled by Darren Gough. Dinesh Mongia (17 not out) along with Sachin saw India through to victory.

Earlier, England skipper Nasser Hussain won the toss and elected to bat.

England batsmen failed to capitalize on an excellent start given by their openers Marcus Trescothick and Nick Knight.

The two left-handed openers put up 71 runs for the first wicket before Trescothick was caught at deep mid-wicket by Dinesh Mongia off Anil Kumble for 18.

Knight top scored for his team with a brilliant knock of 74 runs with 9 fours. Graham Thorpe chipped in with an unbeaten knock of 36 runs to take the England score to 218 runs off 39 overs with the loss of 7 wickets. But this score looked too modest given the murderous mood Sachin and Sehwag were in.

The next match of the series is in New Delhi on Thursday.
