Lindsay lets Flintoff get away with it
19.32 IST   27th Jan 2002

By IndiaExpress Bureau

In a ruling that is bound to exacerbate the tensions between the International Cricket Control and the Indian Cricket Board, match referee Dennis Lindsay refused to penalize England speedster Andrew Flintoff for hurling verbal abuses at Virender Sehwag during the third One-Dayer in Chennai.

England coach Duncan Fletcher on Sunday told reporters that Lindsay had spoken to both the sides but decided against punishing anyone. "It shows he is not too serious about the issue," Mr. Fletcher said.

Flintoff was seen abusing Sehwag after being hit for a few runs in the Chennai match but Fletcher justified the bowler's reaction saying he had not gone overboard. "As long as you make sure you don't cross the line, it’s within your rights. He was just making a point. He did not go overboard," Mr. Fletcher said.

Fletcher said as a rule, fast bowlers are aggressive. "There are hardly any successful fast bowlers who are not aggressive," he said.
