With this win, India have taken a 2-1 lead in the six-match series. Chasing a low victory target of 218 runs, India almost messed it up in the end, but romped home with some sensible batting from wicket keeper Ajay Ratra and Ajit Agarkar. India got off to a tremendous start, with their new opening pair of Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag, who came all guns blazing on the England bowling attack. Sachin was the first to reach his fifty off just 44 balls with 9 brilliant fours. Sehwag reached his fifty soon after off 57 balls with 8 fours. But on the very next delivery of reaching his half-century, Sehwag scooped a simple catch to Marcus Trescothick at deep mid-wicket off Jeremy Snape. Along with Sachin, Sehwag put 107 runs for the first wicket in 18 overs. Sachin was the next to depart falling leg before wicket to Snape. Sachin scored 68 runs off 79 balls with 10 fours. He was adjudged the Man of the Match. Then it came. The familiar Indian middle order batting collapse. V V S Laxman (26) went first, clean bowled by Matthew Hoggard. Dinesh Mongia (21) followed soon after, caught behind by wicket keeper James Foster in that very over of Hoggard. ODI debutant Sanjay Bangar followed next in Hoggard’s next over edging the ball to first slip for Trescothick to take the catch. Local lad Hemang Badani fell next in the 43rd over caught by Foster off Darren Gough. From a comfortable 130/2, India were suddenly reduced to 201/6 and an easy target looked difficult to attain. But some good batting by Ratra (29 not out) and Agarkar (6 not out) saw India through to victory. Earlier, English skipper Nasser Hussain won the toss and elected to bat. Michael Vaughan (43), Snape (38), Ben Hollioake (37) and Trescothick (36) contributed well with the bat for England. England kept losing wickets at regular intervals due to tight bowling and the attacking field placings by the new Indian skipper Anil Kumble and were bowled out for 217 runs in 48 overs. For India, Agarkar took four wickets, skipper Kumble took two and Javagal Srinath, Bangar and Harbhajan Singh took one wicket each. The two teams head for Kanpur for the fourth match of the series on Monday. in-depth coverage > India England Cricket Series > |
