England make it 1-1 with win at Cuttack
19.21 IST   22nd Jan 2002

By Manish Kumar

England came up with a spirited performance to beat India by 16 runs in the second one-day international at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack on January 22.

With this win, England have leveled the six-match series 1-1.

Chasing a low victory target of 251 runs, India had only themselves to blame for getting out for 234 runs in less than 49 overs.

There were as many as three run-outs in the Indian innings, thanks to some excellent ground fielding by the English.

India got off to a poor start with the first wicket falling with just 20 runs on the board. Skipper Sourav Ganguly (14) was the first to depart edging a Matthew Hoggard delivery to second slip for Nick Knight to take the catch.

Sachin Tendulkar and Dinesh Mongia put up 79 runs for the third wicket, before the Master got out in a most unfortunate manner. In the 22nd over, Mongia straight drove a delivery by Ben Hollioake, who deflected the ball onto the stumps at the other end to run Sachin out. Sachin scored 45 runs with 6 brilliant fours.

The second run out of the Indian innings occurred soon after when V V S Laxman (5) took off his blocks too late to answer Mongia’s call for a quick single. Laxman was so late that England wicket keeper James Foster had enough time to collect the throw from Paul Collingwood and rattle the stumps.

Virender Sehwag too disappointed scooping a catch to Knight at short mid-wicket off Darren Gough. Sehwag scored just 3 runs.

Mongia (49) top scored for India again, but he too was run out failing to beat a brilliant throw from Hoggard to leave India struggling at 130/5.

But there was still hope for India with the presence of Hemang Badani at the crease. But the southpaw from Tamil Nadu got out to a bad shot off Hollioake. Andrew Flintoff took a simple catch at mid-on. Badani scored 13 runs.

Ajay Ratra (30), Ajit Agarkar (29) and Anil Kumble (20) made good contributions with the bat but failed to reach the 251-run mark.

Earlier, Ganguly won the toss and put England to bat.

Collingwood (71), Michael Vaughan (63) and skipper Nasser Hussain (46) excelled with the bat for England.

All the Indian bowlers, Javagal Srinath, Agarkar, Kumble, Harbhajan Singh and Ganguly took one wicket each.

Collingwood was adjudged the Man of the Match.

The next match of the series is in Chennai on Friday.
