Nasser Hussain takes a swipe at umpiring
17.14 IST   20th Jan 2002

By IndiaExpress Bureau

A visibly unhappy England captain Nasser Hussain on Sunday attributed England’s defeat against India in the inaugural match of the one-day series to poor umpiring.

Hussain said he had drawn the attention of the International Cricket Council (ICC) to it.

"I am obviously frustrated with certain things. It was not my team, which lost. It was the game which did lose," Hussain told the post-match press conference.

"All of you were there and saw the couple of decisions which went against us. The ICC and other people should take a look at it and not I as the England captain," Hussain said.

"After every match there is a referee's report in which we also fill in. I have done just that. What's in the report is between me and the ICC."

The English skipper was particularly unhappy about the dismissal of Marcus Trescothick who was adjudged leg before at a crucial stage of the game.

"We are not going to dwell on them because the more we discuss them the more frustrated we'll feel. We got to pick us up for the next matches," said the England skipper.

He said his team had bowled and fielded well and described Trescothick's batting as the best one-day knock he had ever seen. "Only thing is we could not win the game."

He said the absence of Graham Thorpe, down with diarrhoea, affected his team.

Asked about the turning point of the match, Hussain said that his team needed another long partnership to seal the game. "We were four or five down, and needed one big partnership to win."

Hussain said he enjoyed the experience of playing at the Eden Gardens. "The atmosphere, the wicket, the ground, all were as they should be in a one-day. Memories of the match will remain in our mind and heart for long. It's great for cricket."

The British media echoed Hussain’s displeasure.

"The umpiring of S K Sharma was ridiculous. He called two no balls when neither Darren Gough nor Jeremy Snape had over-stepped, twice signaled a six without waiting for the television umpire to tell him it was four and then capped it all with his lbw decision against Trescothick to a ball pitching well outside leg," the Sunday Telegraph wrote.

"It was probably not a good sign when Sharma walked out at the start for his 11th international and waved his hat to the crowd. April cannot come too soon when neutral umpires will stand at one end for these games," the report said.

Another daily Sunday Times said India won the match but the glory belonged to England opener Trescothick.

"(Nasser) Hussain had more to complain about than poor practice facilities last night after his England were arguably denied a thrilling victory in the first one-day international in front of 100,000 baying Indian fans at Eden Gardens, by poor decisions from local umpires," it said.

"Trescothick, batting brilliantly for 121, looked set to guide them past a mountainous target of 282 when he was given out leg before to a ball that pitched several inches outside leg stump by umpire S K Sharma."
