With this match, India has taken a 1-0 lead in the six-match series. Chasing 282 runs to win, England were bowled out for 259 runs in 44 overs. England opener Marcus Trescothick top scored in the match with a brilliant knock of 121 runs off 109 balls. This is the highest score by a batsman at the Eden Gardens in a one-day international. The tall left-handed batsman was adjudged the Man of the Match and his dismissal (leg before by Javagal Srinath) turned the match in India’s favor. For the Indians, Ajit Agarkar picked up three wickets, while Srinath and Anil Kumble took two wickets each. Harbhajan Singh and skipper Sourav Ganguly took a wicket each. Earlier, India won the toss and elected to bat on a good batting track. India got off to a good start with Sachin Tendulkar and Ganguly scoring 78 runs in 15 overs. Andrew Flintoff got his team the first breakthrough when he clean bowled Sachin for 36. Ganguly left soon after caught by his counterpart Nasser Hussain off Flintoff. Ganguly scored 42 runs. V V S Laxman again got off to a start and again got out in the 20s, this time caught at mid-wicket by Paul Collingwood off Darren Gough after scoring 25 urns. Dinesh Mongia top scored for India with 71 runs. Useful contributions by Hemang Badani (35), Virender Sehwag (29) and Harbhajan Singh (18) helped the Indian score to go past the 280-run mark.
