Ajay Ratra replaced Deep Dasgupta as the wicket keeper in the team, recalled were seamers Ajit Agarkar and Zaheer Khan, southpaws Hemang Badani and Dinesh Mongia. Delhi off-spinner Sarandeep Singh and Railways all-rounder Sanjay Bangar have been given a chance to prove their one-day credentials. The squad, which is for the first three one-dayers, does not include Yuvraj Singh and Mohammed Kaif, both of who had turned in impressive performances in the Challenger Trophy. Addressing mediapersons in Bangalore chairman of selectors Chandu Borde said, "After watching the performance in the Challenger Trophy matches, the selection committee decided that Ajay Ratra will be better suited for the one-dayers. It can be different in the Test matches." According to Borde, the indifferent form of skipper Sourav Ganguly had been a worrying thought but he was expected to regain his touch in the one-day series against England. "Forget about the selection committee, even Ganguly himself is not happy about his own form. But in the one-day series he will open the batting with Sachin Tendulkar," said Borde. Borde also defended the selection of three specialist spinners in the team saying the nature of the wicket will decide who will be in the final eleven. The selectors also felt that although Ashsish Nehra had bowled in an aggressive manner in the Challenger Trophy, considering a one-day scenario he had been quite expensive. Zaheer Khan had been tight and economical and had been preferred over Nehra. Team: Sourav Ganguly (captain), Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, Virender Sehwag, Ajay Ratra, Hemang Badani, Dinesh Mongia, Anil Kumble, Harbhajan Singh, Sarandeep Singh, Ajit Agarkar, Zaheer Khan, Sanjay Bangar and Javagal Srinath. in-depth coverage > India England Cricket Series > |
