When play was called off due to rain, India were 118/2 in their second innings, still trailing by 216 runs. Skipper Rahul Dravid on 11 and Sachin Tendulkar on 2, were at the crease. The day started with South Africa declaring their first innings at the overnight score of 566/8, with a huge lead of 334 runs. For a change, India got off to a good start in their second innings with the openers Shiv Sunder Das and Connor Williams putting up 92 runs for the first wicket. Debutant Williams scored 42 runs before edging a delivery from Lance Klusener to Jacques Kallis at second slip to complete the catch. Das was unlucky to miss out on his half-century as he had concentrated very hard for 145 balls to score his 48 runs. Das edged a ball from the South African skipper Shaun Pollock onto his stumps and his dismissal left India at 116/2. Weather permitting India should be able to force a draw with some sensible batting. They have their best pair doing duty, with V V S Laxman and Deep Dasgupta still to follow. in-depth coverage > Indian Cricket Team's South Africa Tour > |
