Indian tail wags at Centurion
22.09 IST   23rd Nov 2001

By Manish Kumar

For a change the Indian tail wagged after India was put into bat on the first day of the third test match against South Africa at Centurion on November 23.

India went with five batsmen and five specialist bowlers in this match, which is for now not being recognized by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

At Stumps Day One, India were 221/8 in their first innings with Venkatesh Prasad (8) at the crease. Anil Kumble (27) was clean bowled on the last ball of the day by Nantie Hayward.

Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly pulled out of the match due to spasm in his neck and back. Rahul Dravid is the stand-by skipper.

With just 16 runs on the board, the first Indian wicket fell when debutant Connor Williams was unluckily given out leg before wicket off Lance Klusener as the ball was going down the leg side. Williams scored 5 runs.

Dravid became the second victim of bad umpiring today when he too was given out plumb in front of the wicket off Makhaya Ntini. The ball was going over the stumps. Dravid too scored 5 runs.

Shiv Sunder Das played well for his 42 runs, but got out to a bad shot, reaching out for a ball, which was too far away from his body to give a catch to Herschelle Gibbs at point off Hayward. India were 90/3 at that stage.

Sachin Tendulkar had himself out edging a poor delivery by Jacques Kallis down the leg side to give wicket keeper Mark Boucher the catch. The Master Batsman scored 27 runs with 5 fours.

V V S Laxman continued his short cameos getting out after scoring 14 runs this time caught at gully by birthday boy Gary Kirsten off Kallis.

Deep Dasgupta, who played so well in the last test at Port Elizabeth, played well here too scoring 36 runs. His dismissal (c Jacobus Rudolph b Hayward) left India at 158/6.

Harbhajan Singh was run out after scoring 29 runs off 32 balls with 6 fours. Javagal Srinath was forced off the field after being hit by a delivery on the left hand by Hayward.

Though Hayward has taken three wickets till now, it was the South African skipper Shaun Pollock who bowled the best today giving away 21 runs off 20 overs, with 11 maidens. He was unlucky to get a wicket.
