Mr. Ganguly was reacting to the totally unwarranted comment from Steve Waugh on the penalty imposed on six Indian players, including Sachin Tendulkar, by match referee, Mike Denness. A furious Ganguly said: "He (Waugh) should shut up and think about Australian cricket." The Indian captain was talking to reporters while the Indian team was practising for the third and final Test, the future of which is hanging in balance. While he refrained from commenting on the controversy created by Denness, Ganguly turned a scathing tongue against Steve Waugh. Waugh justified the decision against Tendulkar. "If he's picked the seam (of the ball) then he has got to pay the penalty like everyone else," Waugh was quoted in news reports as saying. During his interview with the press, he repeated twice that Waugh should shut up. Ganguly received full support from the Indian team coach John Wright. "It seemed unusual that players here (in South Africa) are not allowed to comment, but other players, who are still playing under the jurisdiction of the ICC are commenting." "It's something that needs to be tidied up," Wright said. Meanwhile, livid Indian fans have turned their wrath on Steve Waugh for his support to the punishment of Tendulkar. "Those living in glass houses should not be throwing stones at others," an angry journalist said during a television discussion on the incident. "He has no moral right to speak when he can't control his own players." "When Indian players are prevented by law from speaking out, or appealing against the verdict, how come Waugh has the right to talk on the subject," one caller asked in the same programme. "Aren't Australians governed by regulations or are there different rules for different people," the caller said. "None of the umpires said the ball was tampered with, so where is the problem?" a participant in the programme said. "Sachin's fault was that he wiped the mud off the seam behind the umpire's back, but surely that does not deserve a fine. He should have at best be warned considering his clean image. "Even the South Africans have said the Indians were harshly treated." in-depth coverage > Indian Cricket Team's South Africa Tour > |
