Anger against Dennis spills onto the streets
18.42 IST   21st Nov 2001

By IndiaExpress Bureau

India’s ire against the horrendous decision against batting genius Sachin Tendulkar and five other Indian players spilled onto the streets on Wednesday.

"Go to hell, Denness" and "No to racism in cricket" were some of the slogans protestors in Kolkata raised. Waving posters of local hero Ganguly and Tendulkar, some protestors donning cricketing whites, played out a match where one person played the role of Denness -- a former England Test captain -- and another that of Tendulkar, with the match referee making a series of ridiculous decisions to the delight of the on-lookers.

"We want to tell 'Denness the Menace' that he is biased against Indians and to stop conspiring against the Indian team, which will defeat the English cricket team," said Madan Mitra, chairman of the Rajiv Gandhi Memorial Society, a social organization, which held the protest.

In another demonstration in Calcutta -- home to the famous Eden Gardens -- protesters held aloft garlanded portraits of Indian players as they marched close to Ganguly's residence.
