With South Africa establishing an imposing lead of 372 runs with five wickets still in hand, the outlook looks grim indeed for the hapless Indians. For the second consecutive day, play was called off due to bad light. At Stumps South Africa were 211/5 in their second innings with Jacques Kallis (84) and skipper Shaun Pollock (38) at the crease. The day started with India resuming their first innings at 182/8 with V V S Laxman and Anil Kumble. Pollock took his fifth wicket trapping Laxman plumb in front of the crease for 89. The last Indian wicket fell soon after when Kumble edged a delivery off Nantie Hayward for Gary Kirsten to take the catch at gully. India were bowled out for 201 runs in their first innings, with Pollock taking his 14th five-wicket haul in test cricket. South Africa got off to a poor start in their second innings, thanks to some splendid bowling by Javagal Srinath. Srinath had Gary Kirsten caught by Laxman at second slip for the second time in the match. Kirsten scored 5 runs. Ajit Agarkar struck next soon when he beat first innings centurion Herschelle Gibbs for pace castling his stumps. Gibbs scored 12 runs. Srinath reduced South Africa to 26/3 when he had Neil McKenzie caught behind by wicket keeper Deep Dasgupta for 2. Kallis and Boeta Dippenaar put up 65 runs for the fourth wicket. Dippenaar was caught at silly point by Virendra Sehwag off the bowling of Harbhajan Singh after scoring 28 runs. Lance Klusener hit two huge sixes and three fours in his score of 29 runs, before caught by Sehwag at silly point off Harbhajan. Klusener was unlucky to be given out, as the ball did not deflect his bat. The best South African batsman on view on the day was Kallis. He played all the Indian bowlers with tremendous confidence and great technique. Still not out on 84, Kallis looks set for his tenth ton in test cricket. With a lead of 372 runs with Kallis and Pollock still there at the crease and stroke makers like Mark Boucher and Nicky Boje to follow, only a miracle can save this match for India. in-depth coverage > Indian Cricket Team's South Africa Tour > |
