Familiar Indian batting collapse at Port Elizabeth
22.53 IST   17th Nov 2001

By Manish Kumar

It was another familiar Indian batting collapse losing the first five wickets for just 69 runs on the second day of the second test match against South Africa at Port Elizabeth on November 17.

At close of play on Day Two, India were 182/8 in their first innings in reply to the South African first innings total of 362 runs, still trailing by 180 runs. V V S Laxman on 77 and Anil Kumble on 21 were at the crease.

India started their first innings with yet another new opening pair, this time wicket keeper Deep Dasgupta partnering Shiv Sunder Das.

South African skipper Shaun Pollock ripped through the Indian top order to seize the initiative taking the first three wickets with just 15 runs on the board.

Pollock’s first victim was Das (1) trapped leg before wicket. Das was unlucky to be given out as the ball clearly edged on to his pads off his bat.

Indian vice-captain Rahul Dravid, who surprisingly came at number three, was clean bowled by Pollock after scoring 2 runs.

Pollock picked up his 250th test wicket when he had Sachin Tendulkar caught at mid-on by Lance Klusener. Sachin scored 1 run.

Makhaya Ntini struck next when he clean bowled Dasgupta to reduce India to 47/4. The new Indian opener scored 13 runs.

Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly scored 42 runs off 46 balls with 7 fours, before his stumps too were castled by his South African counterpart.

Virendra Sehwag too failed to show any application and was caught at gully by Gary Kirsten off Jacques Kallis after scoring 13 runs. With Sehwag’s dismissal India were reduced to 111/6, staring at a follow-on.

The threat of following-on the innings loomed larger when India lost two more quick wickets that of Ajit Agarkar and Harbhajan Singh with 119 runs on the board.

Laxman and Kumble have so far added 63 runs for the ninth wicket and in the process saved the follow-on. Laxman, who in recent times has been guilty of throwing his wicket after scoring quick 20 or 30 runs, is looking good at the crease, set for a big knock, provided he gets support at the other end.

Earlier, South Africa resumed their first innings at 237/5.

Herschelle Gibbs top scored for the Proteas with 196 runs and wicket keeper Mark Boucher remained unbeaten on 68.

South Africa were bowled out for 362 runs in their first innings with Javagal Srinath picking up his 10th five-wicket haul in test cricket. Srinath finished with figures of 30-6-76-6.
