India’s gamble fails to pay off at Port Elizabeth
21.45 IST   16th Nov 2001

By Manish Kumar

India, which played just two semears on a lush green top, was forced on the defensive on the first day of the second test match against South Africa at Port Elizabeth on November 16.

The Indian think tank picked the playing XI more on reputation than on condition of the pitch going for two fast bowlers in Javagal Srinath and Ajit Agarkar and two spinners in Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh.

The Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly tried to fit in the role of the third seamer but his two overs resulted in 21 runs.

At close of play on Day One, South Africa were 237/5 in their first innings, with Herschelle Gibbs (155) and skipper Shaun Pollock (0) at the crease.

Protean opener Gibbs hit his fifth test hundred and also crossed the landmark of 2000 test runs in his unbeaten score of 155. It seems like Gibbs has learned form his mistake in the first test where he got out soon after scoring a century. Here, he has become more cautious and looks set for a big knock.

Srinath took the first wicket for Indian early in the morning when he had Gary Kirsten (4) caught at second slip by V V S Laxman. The ball deflected off Virendra Sehwag’s hands, who was at third slip.

With 87 runs on the board, Srinath’s incoming delivery took the edge of Jacques Kallis’ bat and rattled his stumps. Kallis scored 24 runs.

Harbhajan clean bowled Neil McKenzie (12) to reduce South Africa to 116/3.

Boeta Dippenaar took 138 balls to score his 29 runs and was caught by wicket keeper Deep Dasgupta off Ajit Agarkar.

Srinath took his third wicket, this time with the second new ball when he had Lance Klusener caught by Laxman at second slip for 9.

Srinath was the pick of the Indian bowlers today taking 3 wickets off his 22 overs with 5 maidens giving away 51 runs.

Even though India is carrying five fast bowlers in this squad, the Indian think tank choosing to play just two of them on a pitch that would support nothing but fast bowling, comes as a big shock. This might cost India this test match.
