headlines national business sports cricket regional technology world travel autos health opinion | Trainees need good wickets: Marsh 20.21 IST 02nd May 2001 Former Australian opener and BCCI's consultant Geoff Marsh Wednesday stressed the need for good wickets to improve the quality of cricket among youngsters who are going through the paces to represent the country. Marsh was all praise for the wickets in Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai during the recent three-test series against Australia, which India won with a nerve-wracking 2-1 verdict, but said, ''Wickets all over the country need to be of that standard.'' The former Australian batsman, who was at Ferozeshah Kotla Ground to have a look at the trainees of the North Zone Cricket Academy, started under the aegis of the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) Tuesday, said, ''All the youngsters selected for the five zonal academies need to train on good wickets.'' During his visit to the ground, Marsh interacted with the 20 trainees of the academy and inspected the pitch and other facilities. He said there is a need for an institutional mechanism to spot and train talent, which ''India has got aplenty''. Marsh is expected to submit next month a report to the BCCI on overall domestic cricket scenario in India in all its aspects along with his recommendations. ''It underlines those areas that need improvement,'' he said declining to elaborate the contents of the report. He hoped the new zonal academies along with the National Cricket Academy of Bangalore will prepare the right kind of young reserves who would be prepared to break into the international scene. ''This is going to do a lot to Indian cricket.'' He said India also has a large pool of former test cricketers who could help train the up and coming lads with their immense experience and knowledge of the intricacies of the game. DDCA President and Union Minister Arun Jaitely and BCCI and DDCA Vice President C K Khanna were present when Marsh visited the stadium. Meanwhile, the controversy over the appointment of coaches that marked the inauguration of the Academy Tuesday, has blown over as former test cricketer Gursharan Singh also joined the panel of trainers, led by Yashpal Sharma as the chief coach. “There is no problem now with the appointment of Gursharan as the fifth coach with the consent of National Cricket Academy Chairman Raj Singh Dungarpur,'' Khanna said. The other coaches at the Academy are Surinder Khanna, Rajinder Amarnath and Chetan Sharma. -UNI |
