Team committed several mistakes during Olympics: Tirkey 22.13 IST 16th Oct 2004
By IndiaExpress Bureau
Indian hockey captain Dilip Tirkey today said the team committed several mistakes during the recent Athens Olympics where it finished a dismal seventh.
"During Olympics we committed several basic mistakes and also failed to play with full stamina till the last minute," Tirkey told reporters in Raipur.
The 27-year-old said the side also paid dearly for missing several scoring opportunities and failing to convert from penalty corners.
"We don't have a penalty corner specialist who can score consistently. Almost all other teams including Pakistan have experts in this department," he said.
Asked about India's chances in the forthcoming Champions Trophy, the defender said "I will be happy if we finish among the top four".
Tirkey said that the team has already started preparing for the next Olympics, which will be held in Beijing in 2004.
