Mercurial forward Dhanraj Pillay was so peeved with the way hockey is being run in the country that he would have preferred to be a cricketer than a hockey player.Pillay, known for his love and passion for India's national game, said he was so humiliated by the treatment he got during the Athens Olympics that he has decided not to play for the country for the time being. "I felt humiliated in my last Olympics. I did not think that I would be kept out of the match," the 36-year-old said referring to his last match in the mega event where he featured for less than three minutes against Korea. "If the IHF President (K P S Gill) had come and just congratulated me on my 16 years of national service, I would have felt happy. Now I think I should have played cricket and not hockey," the most-capped player of the country told the 'Sahara Samay Rashtriya' channel. "I will play for the country but not in the present system. The system has to be changed if the national game has to prosper." in-depth coverage > Olympic Games 2004 > |
