It was a new match and India had a new opponent, but there was no change in the eight-time gold medallists’ fate as they suffered their fourth defeat in six matches of the competition so far. The loss also dashed India's hopes of improving upon their Sydney Olympics performance, where they had finished seventh, and also robbed them of a place in December's Champions Trophy in Pakistan. Now they will play South Korea, who lost to New Zealand 3-4 in the other 5-8 placings tie, in the play off for 7-8 positions on Friday. Pakistan's win also completed the final line-up for the Champions Trophy, the four Olympics semifinalists -- Holland, Australia, Germany and Spain -- besides Pakistan as hosts and New Zealand. India paid the price for failing to learn from the mistakes they committed earlier in the tournament with none of their star players -- neither Dhanraj Pillay nor Gagan Ajit Singh -- playing to their potential. The famed players performed like novices as India struggled against Pakistan, who stepped up their game in the second half after a barren first half. Continuing their recent domination over their arch-rivals, Pakistan emerged victorious with all the goals coming in the second half with Tariq Aziz (43rd), Sohail Abbas (60th) and Shabbir Muhammed (68th) sounding the board. in-depth coverage > Olympic Games 2004 > |
