Karun Chandhok scores first British F3 Podium
11.21 IST   07th May 2002

India's rising star Karun Chandhok scored the first podium of his short British Formula 3 career at the Silverstone F1 circuit on Sunday, May 5.

The 18 year old prodigy finished 2nd in just his fifth race in the highly prestigious category, putting his hope of finishing in the top 3 in the British Championship firmly on track.

Qualifyings : Karun was confident of a good result going into the weekend after a very good test session at the 3.7 mile circuit the week before but didn't have a very good time in the 2 qualifying sessions held on Friday and Saturday respectively. Karun spun off after struggling with an imbalance in the car, which resulted in his worst qualifying position ever, 8th. In the 2nd qualifying Chandhok found a full one second but climbed up to 7th position showing just how competitive the series is.

Race: India's fastest teenager made a spectacular start to the first race and passed 4 cars on the first lap. When others collided and chaos prevailed in front of him, Karun avoided the mayhem to move up to 2nd place and stayed there till the end of the race, thus showing once again that progress towards the front is being made.

Karun was elated after the race and said " Finishing 2nd so early in the year is just amazing for me. We've had some very hard days thus far and were not too happy with my qualifying performances. But today it all came good and I'm really happy. I don't think any other Indian has finished on the podium so early on in their F3 career !! I would really like to thank everyone at T-SPORT, Neil Brown Engineering who have done a top job so far and of course all my sponsors - JK Tyres, Castrol, Kingfisher, ICSA, Amaron, UCAL Mikuni, Traxx, and Parx."

The second race also went well for Karun and he contended with understeer and rising engine temperature to climb up to 5th.

These results have moved Chandhok up from 8th to 5th in the championship standings with 47 points.
