Proceedings stayed against Priyanka Chopra

Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra got a reprieve in a cheating case as the Bombay High Court stayed the proceedings initiated against her in a lower court in Mumbai.

Justice V M Kanade on Thursday stayed the proceedings of a magistrate's court till the final hearing and disposal of Priyanka’s petitions in the High Court.

On a complaint filed by her former secretary Prakash Jaju, Andheri magistrate had earlier issued summons to the former Miss World and asked her to answer the allegations of cheating.

Jaju stated that he and Priyanka had entered into a contract for promoting the actress in the film industry. As per the agreement, he was entitled to 30 per cent of her earnings and a sum of Rs 30 lakh was due to him, he contended.

Priyanka, however, disputed the agreement on the basis of which Jaju had obtained summons from the magistrate. Her lawyer Satish Maneshinde consulted a handwriting expert who opined that two pages of the agreement were forged.

Advocate Maneshinde relied upon handwriting expert's opinion to argue his point that the agreement was partly forged and the process issued by the court was defective.

A management company, Akshaya Management and Services, also filed a criminal complaint against the actress stating that Priyanka had availed of its services and had not paid the dues.

The High Court has also stayed the process issued in this case by a metropolitan magistrate.

The court, after hearing the parties, observed that prima facie no case was made out against Priyanka and stayed the proceedings in the lower court.
