Censor board clears Jha's film on JP without any cuts
22.23 IST   30th Oct 2004

By IndiaExpress Bureau

The controversial documentary film on Loknayak Jaiprakash Narayan, whose telecast was withheld by Prasar Bharti, has been cleared by the Censor Board "without a single cut", according to film maker Prakash Jha.

"We received a Censor Board certificate yesterday. The board has cleared my film without a single cut," Jha said in Mumbai today.

The certificate clearly shows that the film is based on the life of Jaiprakash and did not adhere to any ideological preferences, Jha said.

He said he would now be dashing a letter to Prasar Bharti informing them about the Censor Board Certificate.

"Now that the Censor Board has approved the film I do not (not) think there should be any reason why the film cannot be aired by Prasar Bharti," he said.

"We had applied for Censor Board certificate in order to help us enter the film at various festivals", he said, adding, "personally I am glad that the film was viewed in total objectivity".

Doordarshan had withheld the telecast of the film after Prasar Bharati raised objections to certain "one-sided" views shown in it pertaining to the Emergency, which the late socialist leader had vehemently opposed.

The movie was to be shown by the public broadcaster on Narayan's birth anniversary on October 11.

Twelve suggestions were given to Jha to improve the film who had declined alleging that the entire episode was "an attempt to distort the truth".
