Spiderman to don dhoti, leap around rickshaws
09.11 IST   21st June 2004

By IndiaExpress Bureau

Imagine Spiderman donning a dhoti, wearing jooti and leaping around rickshaws and scooters. But that is exactly what the new desi avtaar of Spiderman is going to do.

To woo Indian comic lovers, Peter Parker of Queens, the hero under the classic Spiderman mask, is being replaced by a young Indian boy, Pavitr Prabhakar, a Mumbaiakar, by Marvel Enterprises In marvellous comic.

"Unlike traditional translations of American comics, Spiderman India will become the first ever 'transcreation', where we reinvent the origin of a western property like Spider Man so that he is an Indian boy in Mumbai and dealing with local problems and challenges," says Sharad Devarajan, CEO, Gotham Entertainment Group in New Delhi.

Spiderman India interweaves the local customs, culture and mystery of modern India, with an eye to making Spider Man' mythology more relevant to this particular audience.

"Written by Jeevan J Khang, it would be a series of comics which we plan to bring out starting August this year.

The comics would be released in all major cities across the country," says Prithvijit Ramachandra, head, PR, Gotham.

As Spiderman, Pavitr leaps around rickshaws and scooters in Indian streets, while swinging from monuments such as the Gateway of India and the Taj Mahal.
